于1987年11月9日至同年11月11日在美播映，是作为美版G1第三季的续篇，共3话，与G1开篇时期相同并没有特意注明副标题。 重生的完结也代表着变形金刚系列动画在北美的正式完结，后续商品的宣传展开由相关的漫画与电视广告接棒。 而在同时期的日本，“重生”并没有引进，取而代之的是“头领战士”正在电视上热播，两者之间虽然有着相同的玩具设计，不过故事情节与角色个性，甚至于动画角色也完全不同。 本作品は、長らく日本未公開だったが、1996年にタカラから『ザ☆ヘッドマスターズ』のLDボックス発売に際して、映像特典として収録され、その際に新規に日本語による吹き替えも行なわれた。

『2010』のタイトルは語感を優先した日本独自の設定で、米国版では『THE TRANSFORMERS』のシーズン3に相当。映画版における、2005年のユニクロン戦争の翌年である2006年が舞台となっている。2010の読みは、玩具のテレビCMにおいて「トゥーオーワンオー」のナレーションが流れたが「にいぜろいちぜろ」が正式名称である。 与美版G1第三季不同，日版2010跳过了变形金刚大电影，以及不续接美版第四季重生。
